Angie oeh? More like a crash on the N1
Angie oeh? If you are reading this post and hoping to find validation as to why she is on everyones lips, then I am sorry but you are not going to find it. Let me make my position clear. Her music is shit.
There does however seem to be this storm of articles by the media that would suggest she is the best thing to happen to the South African music scene in a long time and one to keep an eye on. To those journalists, bloggers and editors who ok it, I ask, are you fucking mad?
WTF is Angie oeh?
According to Bronwyn McKay of News24, Angie oeh is “SA’s new alternative queen with some dirty rhymes“.
When Angie oeh enters the Zoom chatroom, she is exactly what you’d expect – a down-to-earth ‘chick’ with a coffee in one hand and a smoke in the other. And while her choice of song lyrics may be considered alternative and her tattooed exterior may be slightly intimidating, chatting to the mumble rapper is like chatting to your ‘beste maatjie’.
Lifted from the article linked above.
She came to my attention due to a TikTok post and eventually I saw the now infamous video for her single “Sex in Afrikaans”. For your convenience I am placing the video here. I will give you some time to view it if you haven’t already, and then we can continue with my rant.
My argument and view
You know those times when you sit in traffic on the N1 and the news on the radio reports that there is an accident upfront? The moment that news drops you already know that the traffic is due to people slowly passing by in the hopes to see more of the accident.
Once they pass the spot of the accident, traffic opens up again and you are cruising to your destination. This is what I perceive Angie oeh to be. The musical equivalent of a car crash on the N1.
If she is the crash then the media is the news report. But instead of telling you it is a horrific crash, these idiots are trying to sell it as the second coming of Christ. Something you need to witness and support. They did the same when Die Antwoord made their first appearance on the scene and we all know how that turned out.
Should you choose to take a closer listen to the music itself, it is a collection of lazy beats with repetitive lyrics that would suggest that trailer park trash cannot convey a pure emotion other than lust in a crude manner.
Angie, if you are reading this, crude manner means that your lyrics are distasteful. vulgar and in an unrefined state. An unrefined state means… ag leave it. you won’t get it…
Load the pity story line to make her relatable
She came out of the closet as gay and had a cancer scare. Decided to make music that makes her happy. Writers just have to mention this whenever they get a chance.
I blame reality shows like American Idol and the Got Talent franchise for this. Before someone gets on stage to sing their audition we first have to watch a 5 minute documentary about the adversities in their lives that they had to overcome. Drugs, poverty, cancer, coming out. I am still waiting for a sex addict meth head to win one of those competitions, but trust me we are close.
Let’s be clear. I am not saying that I do not care about coming out and having a cancer scare. I am lucky that I have never had to experience any of those two, but, this happens to a wide variety of people across all sections of society. As with Angie oeh, they also find inspiration in the event and do amazing stuff with their lives.
But I do not support the vulgar lyrics and I do not accept the position of the media that “this” is what we have to support.
The Donald Trump of music?
So between the mumbled lyrics the message musically, based on her EP, is that she is a girl who likes boobies and pussy, steals other peoples girlfriends who hang out at her house to shake their fat asses in front of her.
Please, if you find deeper meaning in her lyrics do show me.
We all had a lot to say when Donald Trump mentioned how you grab them by the pussy. The world was angry. Justly so because we have progressed A LOT over the last decade to know that not only is it disrespectful towards women, but it is just plain wrong. People are fighting for equality on multiple fronts and there is requirement from men to acknowledge that this was and is a problem, and change our perspective and behaviour. Not because it is the PC thing to do, but because it is the way it should be. Equal.
Let’s be equal
If this music was recorded by a man, we would have destroyed him a long time ago. So her being a woman singing this does not give her a golden pass. It does not make it ok.
If this is the message and music you pursue then you will only remain a shock act that does not contribute anything meaningful to any society. And the people who do support the music will also be a fraction of society who will eventually grow up.
As it stands the only purpose of your music and videos is that I can utilise it as a cautioner. I show it to my kids and I can say as a parent go explore your sexuality and be who you want to be. Be anything but the visual and intellectual equivalent of Angie oeh. And then I hope and pray they are better than that.
To every journalist, blogger and editor who is trying to sell this as the next big thing… stop trying to shove shit down our throats. There are great bands in South Africa and in the Afrikaans music scene who actually work hard and have more to offer if you would consider finding their stories. It probably doesn’t get as much views, but it is not crap.
